The railroad was formed to serve the Alamosa area of southern Colorado about the time that the Denver & Rio Grande Western started limiting operations on their narrow gauge loop. The Los Pinos & Lake City Railroad began with single line from Trinidad to Alamosa. The track was built directly west out of Trinidad into the hills, arriving at the town of Rustic, then on to Woods Landing, before heading into the San Luis valley and Alamosa.
